Crowdfunding: how to choose the right platform to fund your creative project

What is the best crowdfunding platform? As usual the answer is it depends.

It depends on what you are funding, because there are platforms dedicated to commercial projects, creative projects, birthday gifts, social issues and so on. In this post I’ll talk about funding creative projects, in my case funding a short movie project, explaining why I choose Ulule for my short Shame and glasses.

You have to consider many variables: your potential donors target, how much your project is spreadable (local or international), fees to pay, flexible vs fixed funding, payment methods for donors, user friendliness, language localization of pages, the platform popularity in your field, social network integration. I could go on for ages, the meaning is don’t take anything for granted.

You should also look for successful projects similar to yours and verify how many similar projects failed. It’s very important to understand the reasons of a failure. Usually a failing projects is poorly advertised, have a bad description, show boring or low quality videos and have too expensive rewards. If you find nice projects, but none of them had success, then you should take in consideration the case that the platform itself is not the right one for funding your project.

Why did I choose Ulule instead of more popular platforms as Kickstarter or Indiegogo? Because I evaluated any single aspect of the platforms and I found it was the most suitable for my project.

Popularity of the platform in your field

Ulule is not as famous as his competitor, that have already funded projects of hundreds of thousands dollars, but my short movie didn’t need so much money (about 700 euros). In that funding range Ulule had many successful projects. Further more I felt like the “film and video” section had more exposure than the other sections on the website.

Donors target and international projects

Although my project could be suitable for an international audience my target was almost italian. Crowdfunding follows the three funding circles rule: parents and friends are the first donors, followed by friends of friends and unknown people.

Obviously in my case the first and the second circles were italian and hoping to reach a wide international audience was not a good start to realistically fund my project. Since italian people are very bad english speakers I choose Ulule because it offers a full localized version of his interface in your native language. When you connect to the website it reads your ip address and gives you the interface translated in your language. The default language is english, but they also support italian, french, spanish, portuguese and german.

Another interesting feature is the possibility of creating different contents for different languages. Potentially you could create completely different videos, images and written presentations for each language, so that you can send a personalized message based on your target audience nationality.

Currency

Ulule lets you raise money in euros. Raising dollars and than convert is not convenient because of the exchange rates and fees. If you have european donors to pay a double exchange fee! Further more donating 5$ is psychologically equal to donating 5€, but there is a big difference for you, because 5€ i less than 5$!

Reaching the goal

A great advantage of Indiegogo is that it supports flexible funding: you always keep the money you raise, even if you don’t reach your goal, but you pay more expensive fees. But is this always a real advantage?

If you don’t reach your goal you probably won’t be able to realize your project (and you won’t be able to provide the rewards you promised), so often is better for the donor to have the warranty that his money will be given back if you don’t reach your goal. Ulule in this case provides the best frankness, because it works with fixed funding and no money is given to the money raiser until he reached his goal. This is the best warranty to have all the money back in case of failure. Ulule won’t charge anyone of any fee.

User-friendliness e payment methods

This is the most important issue: if you want a user to become a donor he must be able to donate with the fewest number possible of mouse clicks.

The first problem is the registration. It takes time and often the user don’t want to fill in a form with his personal data… But today we have social networks! Ulule lets you log in via facebook or twitter, it’s fast, no registration needed and it needs just one mouse click! In this case the user won’t remember he’s still giving his personal data to the platform. Of course personal data is needed to give money to someone else…

The second problem is the payment method. As I told in the interview for ninjamarjeting.it, italians don’t like electronic payments. It’s very important being able to donate not only via credit card, but also via prepaid cards and via paypal. In fact most of my donors gave me the money in cash or via bank transfer. In this case Ulule is still a good choice: he accepts every donation with a receipt, the problem is that this opportunity is not clear to the donor.

Fees

Ulule fees are the cheapest: 5% and no transaction fees. In fact you should also take in consideration the 3% paypal fee, but in the worst case the total equals the fees of more popular crowdfunding platforms (that accept just donations in dollars). Some of them also add a single transaction fee for credit cards and a fixed fee for non-dollars campaigns.

Conclusion

Ulule was the most suitable platform for my project. In fact I reached my goal and funded my short movie. To be honest I needed more money but I chose a realistic goal to reach. How to write a successful project? This is another issue, you can find some tips in the post “5 golden rules for success” by Ulule. That is a good point to start.

Some other words about Ulule

The support team is great. You will be followed by a member of their team in any single phase of your project: they are usually fast and give you personalized suggestions to reach your goal. The only problem is that is very uncomfortable adding images to your presentation page: you don’t have efficient tools to redimension your images. But I think the bug will be fixed soon.

First shooting session

We just finished the first shooting session!

It has been really difficult, but in the end we managed to shoot most of the shots we need, although it was raining heavily…

The crew was great and the childern did a nice job even if the full day was very tiring!

Unfortunately we ran uot of money… Now we have to organize another shooting session and cacultate exactly which are the shots to finish the short…

Waiting for the editing I can post some stills! No color correction at all.
